Seven Years of Building MAPID

I’m not here to share my achievements as a founder, but to reflect on the incredible journey and process of building MAPID a spatial technology startup. It’s been seven years, and what a ride it has been!

Back in 2018, I was a new father with no steady income and a lot of uncertainty. Despite my family’s concerns and the ultimatum to join the family business, my passion for technology, honed through years of studying geoinformatics in Germany,drove me to create something meaningful.

I started with a small team of surveyors, learning the ropes of managing people and projects, often through trial and error. Over time, I realized the immense potential in leveraging spatial data, especially in a market dominated by foreign companies. Why should we let others control data that belongs to us?

Thus, my startup was born—not just as a business, but as a platform connecting people, data, and decision-making spatially.

The early days were tough, with no clear income and a lot of pressure, but we pushed through. Thanks to the support of my family and the opportunities from the startup ecosystem, we found our footing and began to grow.

In March 2019, everything changed when an angel investor believed in our vision, giving us the boost we needed. Since then, our team has grown from just a handful to 30 dedicated individuals, and our platform is making a real difference—from helping Jakarta plan for floods to guiding SMEs on the best business locations.

It’s not about becoming wealthy; it’s about creating value and making a lasting impact. Last month, we celebrated our journey with a team outing to Pulau Pahawang, something I never imagined we could do back in those uncertain days. It’s a blessing to see how far we’ve come and the impact we continue to create.
